preparing for your move
No one checklist will be comprehensive for every move. big green moving recommends that you sit down at least one week before your move and think of your own needs. Take this time to make a master list of errands to do in the days preceding and following your move. Prioritize, of course. You may want to tell your cable company before you inform your alma mater. But you need to let both know.
Trips to the post office, phone calls to the electric company, etc., should be on this list. It is helpful to post the list on your fridge or put it in your PDA and add or cross off tasks as you think of or complete them. big green moving recommends visiting your hairstylist before you visit your new DMV. In order to prepare your homes for the movers, ask yourself, "Is there any way I can provide the most direct and cleanest access to both my old and new entrances from the big green moving truck?" This may require your reserving parking space for the truck on the street, choosing the freight elevator nearest your apartment, or raking the leaves off your front porch. Better access to your belongings means less time the movers spend navigating around your neighbor´s car or wiping their feet so as not to dirty your newly refinished floors.
insuring your belongings
Federally mandated coverage is provided for all clients. Additional coverage is available upon request. Please follow this link to view "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move", a brochure published by the Department of Transportation.
costs involved
Okay. You are probably wondering what your total will be and how we determine moving charges. There are two parts to every bill: the travel charge and the moving charge.
For most local moves, big green moving charges a fixed amount of travel time to the initial and from the final locations. The travel charge is 3/4 hour multiplied by your hourly rate. For moves that either begin or end far from Washington, DC, big green moving may charge additional time.
The moving charge is remarkably easy to calculate: hours worked multiplied by the hourly rate for your crew. That is it. There are no extra charges for stairs, hills, or long driveways. No extra charges for heavy furniture or even multiple stops. Of course, all of those variables can add time to your move, but we do not have a space on our invoice for the number of stairs we climb. We are movers.
So, let´s go over an example bill so we are all clear. If your movers arrive at 9:00 AM and finish unloading at your new place at 2:00 PM, you will be charged for 5 3/4 hours (five hours moving plus 3/4 hour travel time).
