packing commandments

Walk the walk.

  1. Everything possible in boxes.
  2. Dedicate space for objects you will move yourself.
  3. Store items you will donate in a closet or similar space. (Having them out of sight will make you feel more accomplished.)
  4. Do not bother moving any boxes. (But make sure they are taped top and bottom and sealed as if ready for shipping.)
  5. Start packing the kitchen as soon as possible.
  6. Take apart beds the day before your move. You can leave the beds made and sleep with the mattresses directly on the floor.
  7. When the movers show up, they will take the boxes first, furniture second, and everything else last. It is the everything else that eats up time. If you can decrease the amount of everything else, you will save yourself money by saving the movers time.
  8. Framed items can stay on the walls. Worry about those and the rugs only if you have nothing else to do.
  9. When you think you are finished packing, walk through as if you do not live there and look for anything that is not in a box, but could fit in one (or two or three).
  10. Everything possible in boxes!
Best wishes.
